tarifa

For those who love the summer, the smell of the sea, the salt on the body after a refreshing bath on the beach, and the sun: Tarifa is your place. A Spanish town, in the province of Cadiz, or as many say of "Cadizfornia". The white sand of its beaches, from which you can see the castle of more than 800 years old, the kitesurfing in the distance, the diversity of species in the sea and nightlife, make Tarifa the perfect secret ingredient of happiness. In this article we will discover the 9 reasons why you should stay and live in Tarifa.

Its history

Tarifa was founded by the Romans in the first century. Since then, important archaeological sites have been found, such as the necropolis of the Algarbes.

The square was taken from the Muslims in 1292 by Sancho IV of Castile, called El Bravo. After the Christian conquest, it would be a long time border area, first with the kingdom of Granada and then, after the fall of the Nasrid kingdom, as a stronghold in the defense of the coasts against the Berber pirates and, already in the 18th century, as a military enclave in front of the English possession of Gibraltar.

From the time it was invaded by the Muslims, it retains its urban physiognomy and its layout of narrow and winding streets. Which turns it into a great attraction.

The warmth of its people

A very important factor to take into account when we move to another city is the people who live there.

If you have traveled to different countries you may have noticed that customs make a society more or less sociable, and that makes it difficult or easy to acclimatize to a new place. In Tarifa there is nothing to worry about, the people from Cádiz are by nature friendly and close, so it is very easy to meet people and make new friends.

This also makes Tarifa a pretty safe place to live.

The Festivities

It could not be less. Tarifa has many festivities to enjoy:

  • The Royal Fair is held on the first Sunday in September. This festival has been declared of tourist interest in Andalusia. Every year it brings together thousands of residents and visitors, in a few days of joy and fun.
  • Carnivals: In February (after the famous Carnival of Cadiz) one of the main festivals of Tarifa takes place: the Carnival. Here we can attend numerous competitions, costume balls, tastings of typical dishes, shows and its great parade, where many carnival groups parade through the streets of Tarifa, forming a fantastic display of art and color, filling the streets of Tarifa with joy and color.
  • Feast of the Virgen del Carmen: On the afternoon of July 16th, the beautiful sculpture of the Virgin of Carmen is carried in a procession on the shoulders of fishermen from the church to La Lonja. It is then replaced by a less valuable sculpture to be carried on board and celebrate the maritime procession through the waters of the strait, in which many boats participate.
  • Bonfires of San Juan: On the night of June 23rd, this coastal town makes the famous "quemá de los Juanillos", burning in bonfires dolls representing local and national characters.
